Why do I need this medicine?

Lomefloxacin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat certain bacterial infections of the lungs and the bladder.

Lomefloxacin belongs to a group of antibiotics called the quinolones.

How do I take this medicine?

Take Lomefloxacin exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Take Lomefloxacin at regular intervals as instructed. Do not skip any doses. Continue to take it even when you feel better. You must complete the entire course of antibiotic. If you don't, the infection will not clear completely.

Lomefloxacin may be taken with or without food. You may take it after meals if it gives you stomach discomfort. Always take it with a full glass of water, unless your doctor has specifically told you not to do so.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?     Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?     Do not take Lomefloxacin if you have a history of allergic reactions (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to similar antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin or ofloxacin.

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Do not take Lomefloxacin if you are pregnant.

Do not give Lomefloxacin to children or teenagers unless instructed by the doctor.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?     Inform your doctor if you have heart or kidney disease, diabetes, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, an inherited condition known as G6PD deficiency, or if you ever had an injury to a tendon or muscle.

Alert your doctor if you have bowel disease, especially colitis (inflammation of the colon).

Drink plenty of water while being treated with Lomefloxacin, unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to restrict your fluid intake.
What side effects could I experience?     Lomefloxacin may cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.

Other common side effects include diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach discomfort, an unusual taste in the mouth and headache. If you have diarrhoea, drink lots of water to replace the fluids lost. However, if you have severe diarrhoea or diarrhoea with severe stomach cramps or bloody stools, alert your doctor.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop the medicine and inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Lomefloxacin may cause your skin to be more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct or prolonged exposure to the sun or ultraviolet (UV) light, including tanning beds and sun lamps.

Alert your doctor if you experience any pain in your joints or muscles.
Can I take this with other medicines?     Do not take Lomefloxacin at the same time as antacids or supplements that contain aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc. These reduce the effectiveness of Lomefloxacin. If you must take antacids or multivitamins containing aluminium, calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc, take Lomefloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after such products.

Alert your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially those listed here:

- warfarin (a blood-thinning medicine)
- any diabetes medicine
- theophylline (an asthma medicine)
- amiodarone, sotalol (heart medicines)
- psychiatric medicines
- phenytoin (an epilepsy medicine)
- sucralfate, cisapride (gastric medicines)
- other medicines such as didanosine, methotrexate, ciclosporin, ropinirole, tizanidine

Always inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal medicines and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?     Do not take Lomefloxacin with dairy products such as milk, cheese, yoghurt or ice-cream. Dairy products reduce the effectiveness of Lomefloxacin when taken at the same time. Take Lomefloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after you have taken any dairy products.

Avoid caffeine-containing beverages such as coffee, tea and certain soft drinks.

Avoid alcohol.

How should I store this medicine?

Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
